Sam Grimmer is the Creative Director of Haymarket Media, publisher of FourFourTwo and PC Tech & Authority.
Haymarket has been releasing both magazine titles as monthly iPad editions for the last eight months using the Oomph publishing platform. They have achieved this using only their existing small editorial teams.
What attracted your to publish your magazines on the iPad?
The iPad offers the opportunity to migrate magazine content to a digital platform while maintaining the principles of good print design. I believe that the craft of magazine design lies in the considered use of great typography, photography, composition – values that are almost impossible to maintain in an online environment. But the iPad also supports the best features of the web – fast intuitive navigation, interactivity, multimedia content etc. In short, I think that from a reader engagement perspective, it has the potential to truly offer the best of both worlds.
Why did you select Mogeneration’s Oomph platform to publish to the iPad?
When I first met with Mogeneration, having already seen presentations from other development platform offerings, I could scarcely believe how simple it was. I was waiting for a catch and now, even after publishing 16 magazines on iPad, I’m still waiting. Mogeneration’s offering allows us to concentrate on what we are good at without having to learn complicated new skills and processes. The Oomph solution gives me and my team, complete control over the reader experience. We can execute typography, composition, navigational sign-posting and so on with great subtlety – just as we do when creating print pages, but we can also control the interactive functionality of the app and the way it responds to the reader’s gestures, without having to experiment with unfamiliar coding and html instructions.
What has your experience been like?
We’ve had to learn a few new simple tricks, but we have not had to bury our heads in copies of “HTML for dummies” or “iPad SDK for the rest of us”. By working closely with Mogeneration we’ve been able to concentrate on what we do best – creating compelling dynamic content. Oomph’s latest version offers practically every form of interactive behaviour we believe useful for communicating more effectively with our audiences.
