The Australian Android App by News Digital Media – Powered by Oomph
To celebrate the launch of the first mass market Android tablet into Australia back in September 2010, News Digital Media released The Australian App for Android. The Australian is their flagship newspaper and the largest circulating daily and only national newspaper in Australia. NDM is one of Australia’s largest and most innovative digital media publishers.
NDM selected the team at Mogeneration, innovators of the Oomph digital publishing platform to complete this high profile project. NDM was first to put a news application into the market when it created The Australian application for Apple’s iPad and as an Android App on Samsung’s GALAXY Tab (7-inch display models only).
As quoted from The Australian website; “NDM are committed to delivering world class journalism in new and innovative ways and the Android app allowed readers to enjoy the best reporting and analysis in the nation wherever they were and on whatever platform they wanted to use”.
“The Australian’s iPad and GALAXY Tab applications bring together the best elements of print and digital news in one convenient and seamless experience so that you can enjoy The Australian’s quality journalism anytime.”
The Australian App was pre-loaded onto all shipped Samsung Galaxy Tabs (7 Inch display models only). Optus partnered with News Corp. through the launch all consumer customers purchasing a Samsung GALAXY Tab on a 12 or 24 month contract will be given free access to The Australian newspaper’s Android application (valued at $8.99 per month) for the length of their contract. Everyone else who bought the Galaxy Tab received a free trial for 3 months (normal cost of the App is $8.99/ month).
Austin R. Bryan, Director of Optus Digital Media said, “Tablets are devices which thrive on rich and interactive content. Our partnership with News Limited gives eligible customers access to great Australian content while also demonstrating how to get the most out of this new and exciting device.”
By using Mogeneration’s digital publishing platform Oomph, the first version of the app was able to be delivered in tight timelines. A full function release followed in December 2010 and the app has continued to evolve as new requirements were added by NDM. It was also the first time Oomph was used to publish to the Android operating system.

Why did NDM choose Mogeneration’s Oomph Digital Publishing Platform?
Mogeneration was selected to build this app based on an existing relationship with NDM News Digital Media.
Keith Ahern was part of the NDM mobile team that developed the m.news.com.au – the mobile news site for news.com.au in 2008 with Dan Swan then, General Manager, Wireless & Broadcast at developer Hyro (ASX: HYO). Keith left NDM and with Tom Adams (Oomph CTO) became the co-founders of Mogeneration who started developing iPhone apps in 2008. Dan would soon join becoming Head of Oomph Client Services.
Mogeneration and NDM iPhone apps include:
iPhone.news.com.au – one of the most visited iPhone sites in Australia – still running the same today as designed and developed by Mogeneration founders and the NDM team.
- iPhone.truelocal.com.au – including location based services by integrating with the Optus LBS server
- iPhone.Moshtix.com.au – the first iPhone ticketing web app in Australia.
- TruLocal Android App – the first Android app for NDM and also GPS aware.
- GetPrice iPhone App – as well as GetPrice’s price comparison, also featured offline use and store locator
