Resident Magazine is created by Tim Palmer (Editor & Publisher) & Mark Marcelis (Editor & Art Director). Tim took the time to talk to us about his experience creating the iPad version.
Resident Magazine is the Northern Territory’s only lifestyle magazine. Comprehensive and beautifully photographed features including residential homes, the Territory’s people, the arts, travel, fashion & the best entertainment. This definitive publication covering Darwin to The Alice, is the local’s magazine of choice, and is essential reading for anyone travelling to the N.T.
Northern Territory Resident lifestyle magazine Publishers Tim Palmer and Mark Marcellis were keen to keep up with the technology advancements in tablet publishing. Their magazine is jam packed full of rich photography and design and they felt this was well suited to the interactivity available in digital magazine technology on the iPad. They have made their magazine fully interactive and include behind the scenes interviews and recipes, which enhance their printed magazine.
Resident magazine is a bi-annual publication, so after signing with Oomph in late February 2011 they planned to make their next May edition on the iPad.
The Editors Tim and Mark do absolutely everything on the magazine themselves, from finding photo shoot locations, to taking the shots and writing the articles. Their iPad version was the same, just with shorter timeframes!
Tim explains “We managed to make the 300 page iPad version in just a week, using just two people. Considering the fact that this is our first launch to iPad and using Oomph, and that we also converted to InDesign just before starting the iPad version. This really shows how easy it is to use Oomph.”
Resident magazine was given on site training and additional support “Oomph has given us the support and training that they had guaranteed to do which has helped us produce Resident as a beautiful digital magazine.”
“Mark and I were excited beyond belief to watch our App propagate around the world as it was launched. To download it from the App Store was like watching issue 1 roll off the press all over again, but a million percent more rewarding! To be abreast of the technology, to have had a dream run with Mogeneration who understood our abilities and made nothing a problem, to take our baby into the new future, an experience of a lifetime.” Tim Palmer, Editor and Publisher.”

Three highlights from the first edition
- The cover; Jessica Mauboy in her golden glitter glory complete with a hit song certainly makes a spectacular impact
- The social pages – on the iPad version, the hundreds of photos come to life with hot spots enabling the thumbnails to expand to normal size
- The rich Harley Davidson Motor Cycle advertisement – brings together 360 rotation of the Fat Bob and the big power evident in the exhaust noise.
The results:
“We have achieved a situation that has now made Resident Magazine available to the world giving our readers more to read and now watch. This has also benefited our advertisers as they can showcase themselves in more detail.
Already it is a 4 star app in iTunes and has one of the highest user retentions among similar apps with one of the most spectacular covers of any of the Oomph apps.
“It is now up to us to create more innovative ideas and seize as much opportunity with this new technology as we can. And we are very excited to do this with Mogeneration’s Oomph platform.”
