iPhone OS 3.0 – good news for mobile

Tags: iPhone

iPhone OS 3.0 was previewed by Apple today and is immediately available to developers like MoGeneration.

Apple answered pretty much every criticism of the current iPhone except for adding video support. The iPhone has now stretched even further ahead than the competition.  MoGeneration are very excited about the new application possibilities.

There are many, many improvements, here are some that will make a difference to our customers.

  • Application subscriptions – now applications can prompt the user to purchase additional content inside an application perfect for magazines, city guides, and games.
  • ‘Push’ alerts i.e. background notifications – this really allows alert driven applications to flourish such as the Xumii application we co-developed.
  • Cut and paste support for text, formatted text and images across applications.
  • MMS support, including sending locations by MMS.
  • Playback access to the music and playlists in the iPod/iTunes component of the phone.
  • Bluetooth for data sharing.
  • Bluetooth for stereo headphones.
  • Support for physically accessories with companion applications e.g. an FM tuner that is controlled from the iPhone itself.
  • Peer to Peer voice chat for games.
  • Turn-by-turn direction support (like TomTom or Navman) mean better location based services.
  • Embedded maps – the full power of google maps can now be embedded in an application.
  • Embedded – emails can now be composed within an application, previously the user had to leave the application
  • Spotlight – easily search your phone, create applications that provide searchable content to users
